Well, it’s more of a novella than an actual book—my version of a short story.

Actually, this has been a surprise to me, too. The reason why it’s a surprise was that I never intended to publish this story as a stand-alone book. I began this story a long time ago—before Twilight was even released. Back then I was just editing Eclipse, and in the thick of my vampire world. I was thinking a lot about the newborns, imagining their side of the story, and one thing led to another. I started writing from Bree’s perspective about those final days, and what it was like to be a newborn.

This story was something that I worked on off and on for a while, just for fun, in between the times I was writing or editing other Twilight novels. Later, when the concept for The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide came up, I thought that might be a good place for Bree. Her story is a nice complement to Eclipse; it explains a lot of the things that Bella never knew. So I dusted it off and finished it up for placement in the Guide.

At the same time, it came in handy for the Eclipse film. Melissa (Rosenberg, the screenwriter) had a ton of questions about what exactly was going on in Seattle, how Victoria managed things, what Riley was like, etc. I let her read what I had then, and later gave the whole thing to the director, David Slade. David asked if Xavier, Bryce, and Jodelle (Riley, Victoria, and Bree) could read it as well, so all the parties involved would end up having a really strong foundation for their characters before the cameras started rolling. I was pleased that this side of the story would make it into the film and was looking forward to including it in the Guide.

Then I got the news: my “short story” was nearly 200 pages long when typeset. It was too long to fit into the Guide—without ending up with a tome as heavy as the Oxford English Dictionary. My publisher approached me with the idea of releasing the Bree story on its own. One of the major benefits of this plan was that it would be out before the movie, so people would get to know Bree before they saw her in the film. That made sense to me, and we decided to go ahead with it.

There was one thing I asked for: since this story had always been an extra for me, and was meant to be released with the Guide, I wanted to be able to offer it to my fans for free. You all have bought a ton of my books, and I wanted to give you this story as a gift. My publisher was awesome and embraced this idea. We still wanted to also produce a physical book with a cool cover (see below) that you can add to your set if you like, but starting at noon on June 7th until July 5th, it will also be available online at BreeTanner.com

One other aspect of this release is the plan to give a more important gift to people who really need it. One dollar of each book purchased in the US from the first printing will be donated to the American Red Cross for their relief efforts in Haiti and Chile and other parts of the world where people are in great need. We’re going to have an option online as well, so you can choose to make a donation if you want when you read the story online. I hope you will. I think that we can really help a lot of people with this.

I really hope you all enjoy this story. I had a blast writing it. I’m glad that after all this time cooling her heels in my files, Bree finally gets her chance to shine.

• Why doesn’t the film have a director yet?
  Stephenie Meyer still hasn’t decided whether she wants one or two films. Word is that she’s just not sure which would be best for the film “creatively.” Some of you have your own opinions about the script, so what’s your advice for Meyer?

• When will filming begin?
  They hope to shoot the fourth book as early as this Fall in Vancouver, according to a recent interview with the film’s producer, Wyck Godfrey.
• How are they going to pull off Renesmee, the half vampire, half human child of Bella and Edward?
  Godfrey shed some light on this, as well: “I keep having visions of Benjamin Button in my head. It’s certainly going to be visual effects in some capacity along with an actor. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being a full CG creation, but it also may be a human shot on a soundstage that then is used to shrink down.”

Shrinking down a human a la Honey I Shrunk the Kids? Oy. I bet the members of my Twilight the Saga group have a thing or two to say about this. Hopefully the final Renesmee won’t look as ridiculous as she sounds.

I wanted to apprise you all of a few upcoming things.

You know I’ve been doing the hermit thing this last year, in so far as media is concerned, and I’m not changing that now, but I am making an exception. I’m doing this for a good reason: I am so pleased and amazed and thrilled with what Chris Weitz has done with New Moon that I want to talk about it, and to show my support for him. And since I’m only doing one interview, better make it big. Really big. So….I will be on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Friday, November 13th. Check the local listings on Oprah’s website to find out what time it will be on where you live.

Of course, most of the questions for Oprah will be designed for a broader audience than just die-hard Twilight fans, and I imagine people who read this site and other fansites will already know most of the answers. To rectify this, I’m going to answer your more specific questions on-line. The official Twilight Saga website (www.TheTwilightSaga.com) will be taking any New Moon movie-related questions you might have for me, and then I’ll answer those most frequently asked. I’ll post the answers on the Twilight Saga website and also here on my own site. Questions can be submitted to TheTwilightSaga.com from noon (Eastern Standard Time) on Monday, November 9th through noon Tuesday, November 10th. The answers will be posted Monday, November 16th—or New Moon Premiere Day, as it is known around my house. If you’ve never seen Gattaca, go watch it now. One of my favorite movies of all time. It’s such a great example of character driven science fiction, which is ideal for The Host, no? I’m having an absolute blast imagining different dream casts, which I would post if people didn’t take my silly blogs so seriously these days. I’m looking forward to seeing the cast lists you come up with in the fansite forums, and if any of them match mine.

MTV has a gallery with several brand new shots from the absolutely wicked looking Female Force comic book based on the life of Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer!

“Female Force: Stephenie Meyer” is written by Ryan Burton, with art by Dave Macneil and Vinnie Tartamella. The comic book arrives on shelves November 11, and according to Bluewater, fans will be able to find it in comic shops, as well as Barnes & Noble stores.

The first-ever festival will be all about Twilight — the best-selling four-novel vampire series written by Stephenie Meyer and set in Forks.

“We really wanted to have an event that would coincide with Stephenie Meyer Day in Forks,” said Barb Frederick, Port Angeles Downtown Association director.

“This will allow fans to enjoy both events in the two very different places that are both important to the books.

“This is also a way that we can really thank fans for all of the help it has given to our stores.

“We have all felt the impact.”

The celebration will begin at noon Thursday with Bella’s “re-birthday” at Dazzled By Twilight, 135 E. First St., in Port Angeles.

The “re-birthday celebration, which will continue until 6 p.m., marks the day that Bella — Isabella Swan, the human heroine of the series, who falls in love with vampire Edward Cullen — is transformed into a vampire in the novels.

5. BELLA AND EDWARD REUNITE IN ITALY

After an almost completely Edward-less “New Moon,” by the end of the book readers are almost more desperate to reunite with their favorite hunky vampire than Bella was. For those of you who didn’t catch the tease on this scene at Comic-Con (RPattz got his abs! Or at least got them airbrushed…) and have been avoiding any tabloid that has to do with Kristen and Rob in Europe (set pictures from Italy were leaked), then I envy you for not having any idea how epically awesome Edward and Bella reuniting is going to be. Let’s just say, that’s going to be one hell of a kiss.

4. JACOB GETS HIS GIRL

Poor Jacob. After mooning (pun intended!) after Bella for three long books, it seems all hope has been lost for him to find the girl of his dreams. But then in “Breaking Dawn,” he sees Bella and Edward’s daughter Renesme for the first time and, as written by Stephenie Meyer, “The gravity of the earth no longer tied [Jacob] to the place where [he] stood. It was the baby girl in the blond vampire’s arms that held [him]here now.” Catherine Hardwicke and now Chris Weitz have shown their skill in adapting mere words and mental images into amazing visual sequences, so I can’t wait to see how they show when Jacob “imprints” and finally gets his own girl — newborn baby or not.

3. THE CLIFF JUMP

Once again, unless you’ve been avoiding “New Moon” movie rumors all together, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about the infamous cliff jump. When we recently talked to Chris Weitz, he told us the scene would be a seamless melding of CGI and actual footage to make Bella’s desperate dive to defy Edward as realistic as possible. Even knowing it’s coming, Bella’s jump is bound to be as shocking to see as it was to read for the first time. The look on KStew’s face is sure to be priceless.

2. THE TENT

What happens when you’re the most precious object in the world to both a vampire and a werewolf? Well, they’ll both skip a giant battle between bad vamps, good vamps and shapeshifters to protect you in a tent far from danger. But what happens if it’s during the winter, and your only chance at keeping your body temperature up is cuddling with the extra warm werewolf in his sleeping bag? And if your boyfriend the vampire can read that werewolf’s mind as he’s thinking up some pretty inappropriate things to do to you? That leads to some good drama, my friends. Some very good drama.

1. THE WEDDING

It’s what the entire “Twilight” series was building up to:The wedding between Bella and Edward. Finally, the two of them can be together forever. Finally, they can get it on. And finally, she can become a vampire (sorry, Edward). But the wedding itself, though short in “Breaking Dawn,” is bound to be a beautiful and drawn out affair on screen (InStyle even recently had iconic fashion designers — Zac Posen! Badgley Mischka! — sketch what they envision Bella’s wedding dress to look like). Besides, it allows us just for a moment to pretend it’s KStew and RPattz, not Bella and Edward, walking down that aisle.
